Here are a few communities that may serve as inspiration for civil society communication and collaboration practices:
- Building New Narratives in Civil Space: Communicators for Civic Action
Within CIVICUS—a global alliance of CSOs and activists working to strengthen citizen action and civil society—the Community of Practice (CoP) Communicators for Civic Action provides a space for communicators to exchange knowledge on narrative strategies, digital advocacy, and campaign planning. It also offers comprehensive guides for CSOs on both external communication (campaigns, media) and internal communication (teams, volunteers).
- Communication for Democratic Participation: CoP DEMoS
Under the umbrella of the OECD, the CoP DEMoS focuses on participatory democracy. While communication is not a standalone theme, the community contributes to areas such as narrative design, citizen dialogue, and transparency in decision-making processes. Among its key publications is Innovative Citizen Participation and New Democratic Institutions.
- Open Data Communication with Infographics and Narratives: GIFT
The Global Initiative for Fiscal Transparency (GIFT) runs a Public Communication Working Group aimed at enhancing citizen engagement in open data processes through communication. It provides infographic guidelines and narrative-based campaign frameworks for governments and CSOs.
- Narrative with a Focus on Digital Trust: Superbloom
Superbloom, an open-source community for civic tech practitioners, hosts the Communicators CoP. It produces collective resources and learning spaces on digital ethics, accessibility, and trust-centered narratives at the intersection of technology and communication.
- Narrative Initiative (USA): Develops story-based strategies, focusing on story-based campaigns and narrative power as tools for social change.
- Concord Europe: Represents European CSOs and leads advocacy-driven campaigns at the EU level.
- Human Rights Watch: Produces narrative-driven crisis communication and campaign reports that contribute to the field of human rights communication.
